But at such a workshop in China last summer, he was introduced as “Mr. Joke.”
He embraced the name: a version of his own, lost in translation. The idea that he – a small-town newspaper man and photographer turned journalism instructor – would be called to dispense his wisdom to a country without a free press once would have seemed like a joke.
This summer he returned to China for, as he blogged, “Mr. Joke’s reprise.” He spent a month discussing community journalism with students, professors, community leaders and industry
professionals in Shanghai, Chongqing and Zhengzhou, as they look to serve their communities in the ways state-run media have not: through local news.
“Great community media help build, nurture and sustain great communities,” Lauterer said. “If you want a great town or village, you’ve got to have a great paper.”
