My dear Chinese student editors of the Huixing Journal,
Greetings from a distant supporter who has been watching your growth and development for the last three months. Let me say how proud I am of all of you and your effort to bring quality local reporting to your community. It is so exciting for me to see that the leaders of tomorrow's China recognizing the vital role of community journalism in helping to create and maintain a great democratic society. During my recent visit to China I was very impressed with the Chinese journalism students I met; they wanted to know the truth and they were genuinely committed to making China a more caring, compassionate and transparent nation. You student-journalists in Chongqing have a great opportunity to make a real difference in your "community," as well as in China at large, because I sincerely believe many supportive patrons will be watching your progress! You are pioneers! As you succeed, others will see the benefits of great community journalism and follow your example. I congratulate you on your work, and commend your professor Ren Li for his courage and vision as well. You can change China, one community at a time. And you have taken that first step. If so-called "ordinary citizens" realize and embrace their own value and importance, they will take part in and help nurture the Harmonious Society. China will only be the better for it. Long live the Huixing Journal!
